MTV BASE: cassper nyovest’s 2015 earnings: the game is changing
The landscape of the music industry has changed over the past few years. Labels are struggling to make money, albums aren’t selling and fans prefer to listen a song via YouTube a thousand times rather than buying (in retail or on iTunes). Where is the money now?
Most artist’s – international and local – will tell you that shows, concerts, gigs, festivals and tours are the sure way of making a good earning, and that’s where artists are starting to shift their focus to.
One person who has clearly found the winning formula is Cassper Nyovest. The “Mama I Made It” rapper recently revealed that he made an astounding R8 million last year from touring alone!
Although he was just snapping back on Twitter, Cassper’s response says a lot about how the cashflow distribution in music is changing. He filled up the dome but he also performed at many gigs in small towns and around country.
He signed up for club shows, featured at festivals (although he wasn’t at Maftown heights…) and performed at birthdays parties and all of this added up to a crazy R8 million and this doesn’t include album sales, sponsorship deals or any other kind of income he might have.
Do you think this new focus on gigging will impact how much we have to pay for concert tickets?
